After J. H Riesener 19th Century

A French Late 19th Century Gilt Bronze mounted Amaranth, sycamore & Fruitwood Marquetry Commode, Design after J. H Riesener.

H 94cm W 166cm D 64cm

The shaped marble top above a central long drawer flanked by a pair of short drawers. This stunning commode follows the designs of two models executed by Riesener. The first being a commode created by Riesener in 1778 for Louis XVI's cabinet de retraite at the Chateau de Fontainebleu and was later moved to his library at Versailles.

The second was created for the bedroom of Pope Pius VII, also at the Chateau de Fontainebleu, in 1801. The purpose of the Pope's visit to Fontainbleu was to discuss with the then First Consul Napoleon, the place of teh Roman Cathoilic church in post-revolutionary France. The resulting concordat of 1801 which consolidated the church's position as the majority church in teh country also lent its name to the Commode - Commode du Concordat.
